In the wake of a recent investigation by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) into a case that identified serious concerns about the conduct of a civilian jail guard who failed to provide adequate care to a man in custody, the British Columbia (BC) Ombudsperson is renewing calls for independent oversight of jail guards in municipalities policed by the RCMP.

The European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) recently published a report on “Strengthening Human Rights Accountability at Borders”. The report builds on the findings of a previous report, which identified and analysed the underlying causes of gaps in human rights accountability at borders.

2022-07-18New report sees NHRIs hold up a mirror to the rule of law situation in Europe
For the third year in a row, National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) from around Europe have reported on challenges in the rule of law landscape in their countries. At the same time, they highlight NHRI actions to safeguard the rule of law and address recommendations to state authorities and European policy makers. These insights are compiled in ENNHRI’s third annual report on the state of the rule of law in Europe.

The Victorian Ombudsman's recently launched conciliation function offers Victorian public organisations (including local government councils) and complainants an efficient and meaningful alternative in resolving their complaints. The Ombudsman has been very pleased with the initial feedback received, as the office looks to promote conciliation as a valuable resolution tool in the future.

Esther Giménez-Salinas ha tomado posesión del cargo de Síndica de Greuges en un acto que ha tenido lugar en el Palacio del Parlamento de Cataluña. Giménez-Salinas fue elegida por el Parlamento de Cataluña el pasado 30 de junio, con 91 votos a favor y 39 en contra.
