Ontario Ombudsman releases Annual Report 2020/2021

In his 2020-2021 Annual Report, the Ombudsman details how his office helped thousands of Ontarians navigate confusing and rapidly changing information about public services during the COVID-19 pandemic. From simple referrals to complex investigations, Ombudsman staff interventions bridged gaps in systems under stress.

People’s Advocate presents observations of human rights and freedom in 2020
In 2020, there were multiple human rights violations in the Republic of Moldova and some exaggerated restrictions were imposed that had a negative impact on certain freedoms and democratic processes. The COVID-19 crisis has led to deepening poverty, growing inequalities, structural and enhanced discrimination and a worsening of the human rights situation.

AOC Violates ICCPR by not Separating Defendants from Prisoners in Detention; CY Urges Improvement
In order to solve prison overcrowding, the Agency of Corrections (AOC) put accused persons, who are presumed innocent, in the branch prisons of non-prison correction agencies, leading to worse detention conditions than those of actual inmates and violating the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which states that untried persons should be separated from convicted detainees. Therefore, the CY has urged the AOC to review the situation and make improvements.
