It has existed in many countries for several decades as an alternative to the classic complaint handling procedure. Issue 8 of the IOI’s Best Practice Paper series was developed by the Ombudsman and State Comptroller of Israel and draws on the office’s vast experience in this field.

Ombudsman investigation into operational arrangements for statutory visits under Justices of the Peace Visit Programme
Ombudsman Winnie Chiu announced the completion of the direct investigation into the operational arrangements for statutory visits under the Justices of the Peace Visit Programme (“JP Visit Programme”). The Ombudsman made 13 recommendations for improvement to the Administration Wing, the Correctional Services Department, the Immigration Department, the Hospital Authority, and the Social Welfare Department.

Kevin Brezinski takes the helm as Alberta’s new Ombudsman and Public Interest Commissioner
A swearing-in ceremony for the leader of two independent offices of the Alberta Legislative Assembly took place on 31 January 2023. Kevin Brezinski is Alberta’s tenth Ombudsman and third Public Interest Commissioner, accepting a five-year appointment to the dual roles.

New Secretary General Bernhard Achitz takes office
On 10 March 2025, Mr. Bernhard Achitz took office as the new Secretary General of the International Ombudsman Institute. He succeeds Gaby Schwarz in this important role and is looking forward to continuing the important work and services, which the IOI provides to its members around the world. He thanks Ms. Schwarz for her strong commitment and service to the IOI.

The Federal Ombudsman Office has extended its services to merged districts of former Tribal Agencies and opened its two offices, one in Sadda district Kurrum and another at Wana South Waziristan, to provide speedy relief and justice in those areas.
