Casebook July 2024 is the first of what will be biannual reports featuring case studies illustrating how the NSW Ombudsman achieves those outcomes.

Report on Townsville’s Cleveland Youth Detention Centre released
The Cleveland Youth Detention Centre inspection report: Focus on separation due to staff shortages, prepared by the Inspector of Detention Services, was tabled by the Honourable Curtis Pitt MP, Speaker of the Queensland Parliament on Tuesday 27 August 2024. The report by Queensland Ombudsman, Mr Anthony Reilly makes 15 recommendations for improvement at the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre on issues including staffing levels, approval processes for separations and the provision of basic facilities in separation rooms and holding cells.

La Diputada del Común, Lola Padrón, ha solicitado a la Consejería de Presidencia, Administraciones Publicas, Justicia y Seguridad que se adopten las medidas necesarias para que, con la diligencia debida y en estricto cumplimiento de la Ley Canaria de Educación no Universitaria, se proceda a destinar al presupuesto educativo el 5% del producto interior bruto canario, conforme al mínimo que regula la citada Ley. Padrón asegura que es preciso que se cumpla la Ley 6/2014, de 25 de julio, “en aras de alcanzar el logro de los principios rectores del sistema educativo canario”.

South Australian Ombudsman's 2023-24 Annual Report tabled in parliament
The South Australian Ombudsman’s 2023-24 Annual Report was tabled in parliament on Tuesday 15 October 2024. The Ombudsman, Ms Emily Strickland, reported a five per cent increase in the number of complaints received – rising to just over 4600. More than 180 complaints were resolved by agreement including through the use of statutory conciliation powers.

Malera made the call in a presentation she made during a webinar organized by the University of Malawi (Unima).

UN Resolution underlines important role of Ombudsman in achieving the SDGs
On 17 December 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted the Resolution on The role of Ombudsman and mediator institutions in the promotion and protection of human rights, good governance and the rule of law. This resolution is submitted biennially and the newly adopted version acknowledges the important contribution Ombudsman institutions make to ensure the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 16 on building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

In the year 2024, the Provincial Ombudsman Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded a significant surge in complaints, totaling over 5,348 cases with 4,043 complaints disposal - a notable increase from the previous year. New Secretary General Bernhard Achitz takes office

He succeeds Gaby Schwarz in this important role and is looking forward to continuing the important work and services, which the IOI provides to its members around the world. He thanks Ms. Schwarz for her strong commitment and service to the IOI.
