Outgoing Ombudsman calls for review of Ombudsman Act
Outgoing Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has called for a review of the Ombudsman Act. Speaking today [30 September 2021] at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Petitions, the Ombudsman said that the legislation, which dates back to 1980, should be replaced with a more modern, fit for purpose alternative, in line with the United Nations endorsed Venice Principles - the global standard for public service Ombudsman institutions.

Control Yuan presents 90th Anniversary Special Issue
On 29 July 2021, the Control Yuan officially released “The Control Yuan 90th Anniversary Special Issue.” 2021 marks the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Control Yuan (CY). At the end of 2020, President Chu CHEN instructed CY Secretary General Judy, Fu-meei JU to start compiling an anniversary special issue in the hopes of showcasing the positive work that the CY does in helping the workings of government.

Peter Tyndall awarded Honorary Life Membership
Mr. Peter Tyndall, Ombudsman and Information Commissioner of Ireland and former President of the IOI, has been awarded IOI Honorary Life Membership. At its mid-term meeting on 15 November 2021, the IOI Board of Directors expressed its gratitude for Mr. Tyndall by acclamation for his long-term and very successful work as President of the IOI.

Victorian Ombudsman investigates EPA’s approval of spoil location sites for West Gate Tunnel Project
The Victorian Ombudsman has launched an investigation into the Environment Protection Authority’s (EPA) decisions to approve sites to receive spoil from the West Gate Tunnel Project. The investigation follows community concern about where tonnes of spoil from the West Gate Tunnel Project will be located and complaints made to the Ombudsman’s office about the project.

The Ombudsman of South Australia (SA) conducted an investigation into the actions of the council as the retailer of electricity and water to Aboriginal community members in Coober Pedy. The Ombudsman concluded that the council inappropriately managed electricity and water accounts and debts in a manner that was unjust, unreasonable, wrong and contrary to law.

Michelle Morris took office as the new Public Services Ombudsman for Wales on 1 April 2022. She was previously Managing Director of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council. Prior to that she worked for Highland Council in Scotland, for 10 years.
