The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman issued a guide to help care providers learn from its complaints involving record keeping. The new guide focuses on a number of case studies highlighting the common issues the Ombudsman sees, and also includes good practice tips to help providers avoid the problems from occurring in their own settings.

Serious shortcomings in the terminal and postoperative care of older people
Deputy-Ombudsman Maija Sakslin has solved several complaints related to the inhuman treatment of older people and the use of strong restrictive measures during physical pain or terminal care or after surgery. The Deputy-Ombudsman has drawn attention to the fact that the complaints mention the same serious shortcomings.

Le Défenseur des droits publie une étude intitulée « La particulière vulnérabilité économique : éclairages sociologiques en vue d’une meilleure appréhension par le droit de la non-discrimination ». Cette étude met en lumière les freins et obstacles à la mobilisation juridique du critère de discrimination relatif à la particulière vulnérabilité résultant de la situation économique (PVE).

Ombudsman attends symposium of Justice and Accountability Programme
The Office of the Ombudsman attended the closing symposium of the 5 year Justice and Accountability Programme called Chilungamo at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe. Through this program, the office received funding to implement seven main activities which were packaged into four strategic areas of resolution of backlog of cases, public awareness, stakeholder engagement and capacity building.

Ombudsman presents Annual Report 2021/2022
Adv. Basilius Dyakugha, who was appointed as the 7th Ombudsman of Namibia in October 2021, presented the office’s Annual Report for 2021/2022. The Annual Report informs about the office's maldaministration cases, its monitoring of places of detention, the work of the Children's Advocate, as well as the Ombudsman's environmental mandate.

Next Best Practice Paper deals with mediation as an effective tool in complaint investigation
The mediation process is a tool that enables personal interaction and respectful and direct dialogue for promoting dispute resolution. It has existed in many countries for several decades as an alternative to the classic complaint handling procedure. Issue 8 of the IOI’s Best Practice Paper series was developed by the Ombudsman and State Comptroller of Israel and draws on the office’s vast experience in this field.
