Ombudsman Malera sworn in as MHRC Commissioner
On Thursday, 5 October 2023, the Ombudsman of the Republic of Malawi Grace Tikambenji Malera took oath of office as Commissioner for the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC). Honorable Malera together with eight others were hosted to a swearing in ceremony by President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera at the Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe. The swearing-in ceremony follows their appointment by the President three weeks earlier.

AOMA held its 7th General Assembly
The African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA) successfully concluded its 7th General Assembly in Kigali, Rwanda, from 27-29 November 2023. Themed "Navigating Ethical Dilemmas in Mediation and Ombudsman Roles," this assembly was a pivotal forum for leaders and delegates from across Africa to engage in meaningful discussions regarding the evolving ethical considerations in mediation and Ombudsman services.

Ombudsman finds Victoria’s electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle charges administered unfairly
On 27 September 2023, Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass tabled her Investigation into the Department of Transport and Planning’s implementation of the zero and low emission vehicle charge. The report details a range of failures in the State Government’s implementation of the road-user charge for electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles under the Zero and Low Emission Vehicles Act 2021.

Provincial Ombudsman Sindh emphasizes on integrated approach for reducing stunting
On 10 August 2023, the Provincial Ombudsman Sindh chaired a meeting on the Program to reduce stunting. Project coordinators from the Livestock & Fisheries, the Agriculture, the Population Welfare, and the Health departments of the Government of Sindh, as well as the DHO Tharparkar, Thardeep and Thar Foundation participated in the meeting, discussing the implementation strategy for recommendations of the study “Assessment of malnutrition (stunting) in district Tharparkar”.

Parliamentary Ombudsman Petri Jääskeläinen presented his annual report for 2022 to the first Deputy Speaker of Parliament Juho Eerola on Thursday 15 June. In 2022, there were a total of 6,613 complaints. This is the third largest number of complaints ever recorded. The largest number of complaints concerned social welfare, the police, healthcare and criminal sanctions. In the reporting year, 6,857 complaints were resolved.

Chief Ombudsman publishes OIA and LGOIMA complaints information January 2023 - June 2023
The Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier has published his half-yearly data on Official Information Act (OIA) and Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act (LGOIMA) complaints. The data covers the number of complaints received under each Act for the period 1 January 2023 to 30 June 2023, as well as the number of complaints completed by the Ombudsman during this period.
