En agosto de 2017 se destapó en Europa el caso de huevos contaminados por un insecticida de uso ilegal, el Fipronil. En Taiwán se detectaron también huevos contaminados en inspecciónes realizadas por el Consejo de Agricultura del Yuan Ejecutivo (YE). 45 granjas avícolas presentaban altos niveles de Fipronil, amenazando la seguridad alimentaria y causando pánico entre los consumidores.

Cooperation between the Parliamentary Ombudsman and the Spanish Defensor del Pueblo to reunite unaccompanied minor with family
The Office of the Ombudsman of Malta received a request for cooperation from the Office of the Spanish Defensor Del Pueblo concerning an unaccompanied minor who was given shelter in Malta after departing from Libya, and who claimed to have been separated from his family who were residing in a centre in Malaga.

During this year´s European Alpbach Forum a breakout session organised by the IOI and the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) will examine the pressure faced by human rights defenders and the role Ombudsman and National Human Rights Institutions play in strengthening democracy and the rule of law.

Croatian Parliament Adopts Ombudswoman’s 2021 Annual Report
On June 2, 2023, in its plenary session, the Croatian Parliament discussed, and on June 7, 2023, adopted the Ombudswoman’s Annual Report for 2021, thus expressing support for the recommendations contained therein aimed at stronger protection of human rights in Croatia. At the same time, it was emphasized that it would be extremely important for the Croatian Parliament to discuss and adopt the new 2022 Annual Report, submitted in March, as soon as possible, as this would contribute to a higher level of the recommendations’ fulfillment.

El Defensor del Pueblo pide a las administraciones reforzar las medidas de prevención de incendios forestales y mejorar la capacidad de resistencia de los montes frente al fuego. La institución formula recordatorios de deberes legales que inciden en la prioridad de una gestión forestal sostenible, en una adecuada planificación territorial y en la necesaria coordinación entre administraciones.

It was a great pleasure for IOI President Chris Field PSM to meet with the Honourable Mr Stephen Smith, Australian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, on the occasion of President Field’s official visit to London. The meeting took place in the High Commissioner’s office at the Australian High Commission in Australia House, London.

19th Ombudsman de Montréal’s annual report tabled as it celebrates its 20 th anniversary
On 12 June 2023, the Ombudsman de Montréal, Me Nadine Mailloux, tabled her annual report for the year 2022 to City Council. The report covers 2,308 files handled, including 219 new enquiries on a wide variety of subjects, 53 of which were initiated by the OdM.

Ombudsman of the Republic of Malawi, Honorable Grace Malera, participated in a two-day summit on Separation of Powers in the Capital Lilongwe. The event was presided over by the President of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, and it aimed at examining how the country is performing on the doctrine of Separation of Powers.

An Northern Ireland Public Service Ombudsman report, released on 15 June 2023, has found that the significant and repeated failures to properly update patients on healthcare waiting lists in Northern Ireland amounted to ‘systemic maladministration’, and in many cases had a detrimental impact on the health and wellbeing of those waiting.
