Commonwealth Ombudsman releases report into immigration detention notification refusal error
The Commonwealth Ombudsman, Mr Michael Manthorpe PSM, has released a report into the detention of a man who was detained for nearly four years while he still held a visa, as a result of problems with the notification of refusals from the Department of Home Affairs.

New Director for the Ombudsman’s Office
The State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel, Judge (Ret.) Joseph H. Shapira, has selected Dr. Esther Ben-Haim, or Esti as she is called by her peers, to be the new Director of the Ombudsman’s Office. Her nomination been approved by the State Audit Committee of the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) in November of 2017.

Ombudsman meets colleagues from Poland and other Baltic states
On 21-22 May, Ombudsman, head of Children Rights Division and lawyer of Prevention Unit meet Children Ombudsmen of Poland and Lithuania and representatives of the Chancellor of Justice Office of Estonia. Such meetings happen annually and participants discuss topical children rights issues in Poland and Baltic states.

20-year anniversary of the Ombudsman’s Office
For the occasion of the establishment of the institution, on 30 May, 2018, the Ombudsman of the Republic of Macedonia will formally mark the anniversary of the institution in the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia. The holding of this event is under the auspices of the President of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia.

For the second straight year, Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé is among the nominees for Canadian Lawyer magazine’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers in Canada. The list, chosen by the magazine’s internal editorial panel, readers and past honourees, recognizes lawyers who have played a significant role in the legal profession in the past 18 months.

Ombudsman published first report on water billing and disconnection practices
In April 2018, the Office of the Ombudsman in the Kingdom of Tonga published its first report. Although the Office had been established in 2001 (formerly as the Office of the Commissioner for Public Relations), the respective Act did not allow for reports to be published. An amendment to the Act effective in December 2016 now allows for the Ombudsman to publish reports.

Cooperation between Austrian and Azerbaijani Ombudsman contributes to solution in tragic case
The case of a young Austrian athlete who was severly injured in the Olympic village in Baku during the First European Games in 2015 has finally been resolved in part due to the successful international cooperation between Austrian Ombudsman Dr. Günther Kräuter and the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Azerbaijan Prof. Elmira Suleymanova.

Commonwealth Ombudsman released NDIA report
Commonwealth Ombudsman Michael Manthorpe released a report on the 15 May 2018 into the National Disability Insurance Agency’s (NDIA) handling of reviews of decisions under the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013. The report discusses systemic issues highlighted by complaints and stakeholder feedback including significant backlogs, delays in decision making and poor communication practices.

Ombudsman opens new family room at Mater hospital
Ombudsman Peter Tyndall Monday opened a new family and patient room at the Mater Hospital, Dublin. The family room is part of the Mater’s “end of life” care service and will give families who are losing a loved one a quiet, comfortable and private space where they can also stay the night.
