    Ombudsman publishes Annual Report 2010

    This is Emily O’Reilly´s eighth Annual Report as Ombudsman and the twenty-seventh since the Office of the Ombudsman, the first one in the State, was established back in 1984.      Complaints made to her Office in 2010 rise to 3,727 - up 30% on 2009, the highest number recorded in over 10 years.

    The 10th I.O.I.World Conference, to be held in Wellington, New Zealand from 13 to 16 November 2012, will provide Ombudsmen from around the world with the opportunity to meet, share their experience and engage in fruitful debate and discussion. The conference website has been recently launched.

    Iowa Ombudsman reports special Investigation

    Iowa State Ombudsman Ruth Cooperrider received a complaint on February 22, 2010, concerning the manner in which the mayor and several city council members for the City of Monticello attempted to remove the city administrator from his position. A special report about the investigation is now available.

    Board Meeting 2011 to be held in Livingstone, Zambia

    The annual meeting of the I.O.I. Board of Directors will be held in Livingstone, Zambia from 30 October to 2 November 2011. The I.O.I. is looking forward to the fruitfull discussions and upcoming decisions and would like to thank Ms Caroline Sokoni, Investigator General of Zambia, for hosting this event.

    Regional subventions are a huge success

    At the Bermuda Board Meeting in October 2011 the I.O.I. Board decided that the I.O.I. would provide funds up to a maximum of EUR 50,000 for regional projects. Member institutions were invited to submit project proposals with a focus on training activities. Six applicants from five of the six I.O.I. World Regions were successful in the selection process conducted by the I.O.I. Executive Committee in spring 2011.

    Preparations for I.O.I. world conference under way

    The Ombudsmen and staff of the New Zealand Office of the Ombudsmen look forward to welcoming the ombudsman community to New Zealand in November 2012 to the I.O.I. world conference. Formal invitations and information about registration will be sent out in a few months and the conference website has recently gone "live".

    Kick-off for by-laws reform in Vienna

    The Bylaws and Governance sub-committee of the Board met in Vienna in late May. Building on the work begun at the Board meeting in Bermuda, Mats Melin produced a refined draft of possible changes to strengthen and clarify the role of the I.O.I. in a changing world.

    European Region organises OPCAT workshop

    On 13 and 14 September 2011 an OPCAT workshop (Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture) for Ombudsman institutions will take place in Warsaw, Poland. I.O.I. Europe cooperates with the Polish Ombudsman Institution in the organisation of this event.

    The I.O.I. General Secretariat is delighted to offer a new communication service to the Ombudsman community. The weekly “I.O.I. Ombudsman News” brings recent ombudsman news to members and applicant institutions as well as partner organisations and institutions.

    AOB releases international edition of its annual report 2010

    The International Version of the AOB's 2010 Annual Report has now been released. It provides an outline of the activities of the three members of the AOB during the year as well as an overview of international activities, including International Ombudsman Institute (I.O.I) activities and bilateral contacts.´It also includes examples of human rights related cases which the AOB has had to resolve in 2010 when assessing complaints about maladministration and infringements of administrative law by public authorities.
