On 1 June 2020 Mr Vusumzi Magwebu took office as the new Ombudsman of the City of Cape Town. He has vast experience in investigations from both private and public sectors. He is a former prosecutor and was also a senior investigator with the office of the Public Protector, South Africa.

2020-07-012019 Annual Report of Danish Parliamentary Ombudsman now available in English
The English-language version of the 2019 Annual Report of the Danish Parliamentary Ombudsman has now been published. Niels Fenger, who took up the position of Parliamentary Ombudsman on 1 December 2019, points out the value of uncovering recurring errors in order to help many citizens at the same time and stresses that a guiding principle for him is to apply the institution’s resources where they can be of the greatest possible use in protecting citizens’ legal rights.

Many older people in care homes fell victim to COVID-19. Many also faced months of isolation and restrictions often harsher than those enforced for other parts of the population. The EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) looks at how the pandemic affected the rights of older people. It highlights the need for a rights-based approach as governments shape their exit strategies.

2013-09-17European Network of Ombudsmen meets in Dublin to discuss good administration and the rights of the citizen
On 16 and 17 September the next Ombudsman, Emily O’Reilly and outgoing European Ombudsman Professor Nikiforos Diamandouros, will co-host the 9th National Seminar of the European Network of Ombudsmen. Forty National Ombudsmen from all over Europe will meet in Dublin Castle to exchange ideas and experiences in order to promote best practice among European Ombudsmen.

In the extraordinary circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic where the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia allows necessary deviations from human and minority rights, the Protector of Citizens, as an independent state authority for protection of human rights, has strenghtened the supervision and extended its work to almost 24 hours all seven days a week, so that the citizens of the Republic of Serbia could also in extraordinary circumstances achieve their rights.

With little money to spend, inmates in residential institutions are compelled to be “creative” – found Ombudsman Máté Szabó in his recent report. The sum of the spending money which inmates receive remained the same, although prices of the most preferred consumer goods, had increased many times. As a consequence, inmates are compelled to barter among themselves.
