But the latest report "WorkSafe 3: Investigation into Victorian self-insurers’ claims management and WorkSafe oversight" highlights the shortcomings of self-insurers - private companies that manage workers compensation themselves - which have not previously been scrutinised by the Ombudsman.

At the Ceremony, she encouraged tripartite co-operation among the Office of the Ombudsman, members of the public and organisations under complaint to bring about further enhancement in the quality and efficiency of public administration through the lodging and handling of complaints.

2017-10-23South Australian Ombudsman releases Annual Report 2016-17
The Ombudsman tabled his 2016/2017 Annual Report in Parliament on 18 October 2017. The Report highlights that complaints about state and local government continue to rise significantly; there has been an increase of 14% in complaints made to the Ombudsman’s Office this financial year. Applications for external reviews of determinations made under the Freedom of Information Act 1991 went up 44%.

2015-11-04How to build and maintain independence
Possibly the most important element to the success of an Ombudsman is the office’s independence. It must not be, or be seen to be, answerable to the government of the day or to the agencies within the office’s jurisdiction. At the same time, the office must also not be or be seen to be a community advocate. The Ombudsman must clearly be acting in the public interest at all times.
