2023-02-03Ombudsman welcomes Commission’s constructive response to GDPR inquiry findings
The European Commission will strengthen its monitoring of the implementation of the EU’s data protection law. This comes after the Irish Council for Civil Liberties complained that the Commission was not collecting sufficient information to be able to properly assess the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Ireland.

2023-06-23Croatian Parliament Adopts Ombudswoman’s 2021 Annual Report
On June 2, 2023, in its plenary session, the Croatian Parliament discussed, and on June 7, 2023, adopted the Ombudswoman’s Annual Report for 2021, thus expressing support for the recommendations contained therein aimed at stronger protection of human rights in Croatia. At the same time, it was emphasized that it would be extremely important for the Croatian Parliament to discuss and adopt the new 2022 Annual Report, submitted in March, as soon as possible, as this would contribute to a higher level of the recommendations’ fulfillment.

2018-05-22Mandate of Human Rights Defender expanded significantly following constitutional amendments
Under the new Constitution of 2015 the mandate of the Human Rights Defender (HRD) has been expanded by including the power to facilitate the improvement of the regulatory legal acts related to human rights and freedoms. Following the Constitutional Amendments, a new Constitutional Law on Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia was adopted in December 2016. Within this constitutional function, a new practice of drafting laws by the HRD Office is being exercised.

Mr. Peter Tyndall, Ombudsman and Information Commissioner of Ireland and former President of the IOI, has been awarded IOI Honorary Life Membership. At its mid-term meeting on 15 November 2021, the IOI Board of Directors expressed its gratitude for Mr. Tyndall by acclamation for his long-term and very successful work as President of the IOI.

2023-07-12Court enforces Commission’s access to information decision
The Employment and Labour Relations Court has issued a judgment that adopted the order of the Commission on Administrative Justice under the Access to Information Act, 2016. On 15 June 2023, the Court issued the judgment following a case where the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) failed to comply with the order of the Commission.

2018-11-13Our value for money: an independent review
Earlier this year the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) commissioned an independent panel to carry out a peer review assessment of its value for money, led by Peter Tyndall, Ombudsman for the Republic of Ireland and President of the International Ombudsman Institute. The panel has now published their report, which concluded that following the PHSO’s organisational reforms and the service it offers beyond investigating complaints, the Office offers good value for money for taxpayers.
