Report on issues associated with violence restraining orders and their relationship with family and domestic violence fatalities
The Western Australian Ombudsman has tabled a report of a major investigation into the prevention of family and domestic violence fatalities. The report identifies a range of important opportunities for improvements, including the need for a separate strategy to prevent Aboriginal family violence given that Aboriginal Western Australians are significantly overrepresented as victims of family violence. The report further identifies nine key principles for government agencies to apply when responding to family and domestic violence. Each agency has agreed to the 54 recommendations made by the Ombudsman.

L’Office de la Protection du Citoyen (OPC) en partenariat avec Avocats Sans Frontières Canada (ASFC) a lancé officiellement le Guide de bonnes pratiques sur les mineurs en conflit avec la loi en Haïti. Ce lancement s’est déroulé dans le cadre d’un atelier de deux jours de sensibilisation à l’intention des Magistrats haïtiens autour du thème « La justice des mineurs face à la détention préventive prolongée : paroles et actes de Magistrats ».

Ils viennent d’Albanie, du Bénin, de France, de Maurice, du Nouveau-Brunswick (Canada) et du Sénégal, et ils vous parlent des droits de l’enfant ! Initié par le Comité sur les droits de l’enfant de l’Association des Ombudsmans et Médiateurs de la Francophonie (AOMF), ce projet d'exposition a permis d’organiser des ateliers d’expression artistique dans six pays.

Veterans Ombudsman urges more Information to on disability benefit decisions
Veterans Ombudsman Guy Parent released today an assessment of Veterans Affairs Canada’s implementation of the eight recommendations put forth in his 2011 report on “Veterans’ Right to Know Reasons for Decisions: A Matter of Procedural Fairness” and in his 2012 report on “Veterans’ Right to Disclosure: A Matter of Procedural Fairness”. The two reports identified areas of improvement needed to ensure transparency and fairness in Veterans Affairs Canada’s disability application and adjudication process.

Community faces separation after only chance to remain together was squandered
An investigation by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman has found that a small, tight-knit community was denied the chance to stay together due to a catalogue of errors by High Speed Two Limited (HS2 Ltd). A group of six families, from Staffordshire, whose homes were set to be destroyed because they were on the HS2 route, fell victim of a number of failings by HS2 Ltd over two years, placing them under severe stress and worry, hugely impacting their home lives, jobs, careers and health.

L’ombudsman des vétérans, Guy Parent, a publié aujourd’hui les résultats d’une évaluation de la mise en œuvre, par Anciens Combattants Canada, des huit recommandations contenues dans son rapport de 2011 intitulé Le droit des vétérans de connaître les motifs des décisions : Une question d’équité procédurale, et son rapport de 2012 intitulé Le droit des vétérans à la divulgation : Une question d’équité procédurale. Les deux rapports précisaient les améliorations requises pour assurer la transparence et l’équité du processus de présentation et d’évaluation des demandes de prestations d’invalidité d’Anciens Combattants Canada.

Victoria Ombudsman recommends reform of political donation laws
Rules governing donations to political candidates in Victoria are inadequate and should be reformed to protect both public confidence in the electoral system and the reputation of people standing for election. Such changes would be considered under the recommendation tabled by the Victorian Ombudsman in Parliament today.

11th World Conference 2016 – Save the Date
The 11th IOI World Conference will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 13 to 19 November 2016. The Office of the Ombudsman of Thailand will be the host of this quadrennial event which – for the first time – will be held within the Asian Region of the IOI.
