On 2-3 March 2017, the 4th International Symposium on Ombudsman Institutions on the main theme of “Migration and Refugees” was held in Ankara. 48 representatives from 33 Ombudsman Institutions from all over the world attended the Symposium.

Jean-Jacques Gautier NPM Symposium 2016
The 3rd Jean-Jacques Gautier Symposium was held by the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) in Geneva in 2016. The 3rd Symposium, which gives NPMs an opportunity to discuss the challenges they face in the implementation of their preventive mandate, dealt with monitoring of psychiatric facilities and the outcome reports are now available in English, French and Spanish.

4th International Symposium on Ombudsman Institutions – save the date
The Office of the Turkish Ombudsman will hold the 4th International Symposium on Ombudsman Institutions in Ankara from 2 – 3 March 2017. Under the motto “Migration and Refugees” this year’s symposium will tackle issues such as countries’ policies on refugees, vulnerable groups, xenophobia, racism and islamophobia.

Human Rights Symposium held in Barcelona
IOI Europe’s Regional President Rafael Ribó hosted a workshop on human rights challenges, held in Barcelona from 3 – 4 April 2017, to resume the debate on the regression of rights launched a year ago. In light of recent political developments emphasis was particularly put on “Populism? Regression of Rights and the Role of the Ombudsman”. Representatives from IOI member institutions from all over Europe participated at this workshop to discuss and analyse the current situation and the role of the Ombudsman in this regard.
