The Commissioner for Administration and the Protection of Human Rights, Mrs. Maria Stylianou-Lottides, submitted today, on January 15, 2025, to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nicos Christodoulides, the Annual Report of her Office for the year 2023, as well as the individual Annual Reports detailing the work and action of the Office under the mandates of the Commissioner as the Equality Body and the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM).

El Defensor del Pueblo acaba de iniciar una actuación de oficio por la que solicita información al Ministerio de Educación, Formación Profesional y Deporte, y a las consejerías de Educación, para conocer qué actuaciones se están llevando a cabo en los distintos territorios para lograr la inclusión educativa del alumnado gitano en condiciones de igualdad con el resto de la población. También reclama conocer los resultados de las mismas.

10 Students from Sukkur IBA University Selected as Ambassadors for Ombudsman Sindh
Ten students from Sukkur IBA University have been selected as Ambassadors for Ombudsman Sindh as part of the 4th Round of the Ambassador Program. Earlier, 10 students each from Hamdard University, Sindh Madressatul Islam University and Salim Habib University were selected. The selected students aim to foster civic responsibility, promoting accountability and support the Ombudsman’s mission.

El Síndic de Greuges de Cataluña después de diez años de la Ley de transparencia constató que se había avanzado mucho, pero todavía quedaba margen de mejora
En ámbitos como la publicidad activa y el acceso a la información pública se ha avanzado, pero en buen gobierno y gobierno abierto, no tanto. Se mantiene una doble velocidad en la implementación de la publicidad activa, en función del número de habitantes. En los canales de participación de la ciudadanía en la actividad pública hay retos pendientes. Buena parte de las denuncias no se traducen en procedimiento sancionador.

Senior Investigative Officer Samadia Lightbourne Attended Crucial Assembly and Seminar on Human Rights and Inequity in Latin America and the Caribbean
Ms. Samadia Lightbourne, Senior Investigative Officer for the Office of the Complaints Commission in the Turks and Caicos Islands, participated in the annual Assembly and Seminar of the Institutie of the Latin-American Ombudsman (ILO), held from December 4-6, 2024 in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil. The event, located at the confluence of Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, was graciously supported by Itaipú Binacional.

Workshop held at Salim Habib University to select 10 students as ambassadors to Ombudsman Sindh
The 3rd round of the Workshop on the Provincial Ombudsman Sindh’s Ambassador Programme was held at Salim Habib University, Karachi, on 11 December 2024 to instill the concept of civic responsibilities and advocacy skills in the youth of Sindh by carrying out the community outreach of ombudsman mandate to student community and general public. The workshop, initiated through the Regional subsidy of the IOI, focused on the role of the Provincial Ombudsman Office in providing administrative justice to the public, and was chaired by the Honourable Ombudsman of Sindh, Mr. Muhammad Sohail Rajput.

Ombudsperson investigating province’s distribution of assistance cheques to most vulnerable British Columbians during Canada Post strike
The BC Ombudsperson is investigating the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction’s distribution of cheques intended for income and disability assistance clients during the current Canada Post strike. The Ombudsperson’s investigation was commenced after being advised by the ministry that as of the beginning of December 2024, thousands of November social assistance cheques were not yet delivered.

El Defensor del Pueblo urge a los municipios obligados por Ley a implantar Zonas de Bajas Emisiones a ponerlas en funcionamiento cuanto antes
La institución considera que ninguno de los argumentos ofrecidos por los ayuntamientos consultados justifica el retraso en el establecimiento de estas zonas cuyo fin es la lucha contra el cambio climático y la mejora de la calidad del aire de las ciudades, y recuerda que algunos de ellos han recibido ayudas económicas para su implementación. Insta a que los municipios que ya hayan establecido una Zona de Baja Emisión en su territorio se abstengan de adoptar cualquier medida que suponga una regresión.

DPU Advocates for Women Victims of Domestic Violence Accused of International Child Abduction
On Wednesday, 13 November, at the National Congress, the Federal Public Defenders’ Office (DPU) called for greater recognition of the plight of women who, as victims of domestic violence, are accused of international child abduction. Federal Public Defender Daniela Brauner participated in two public hearings held at the Federal Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, addressing the application of the Hague Convention in cases where Brazilian mothers return to Brazil with their children after fleeing domestic violence.

Recherche de l'Ararteko sur les attitudes machistes chez les jeunes et les adolescents du Pays basque
L'Ararteko-Ombudsman du Pays basque a présenté en octobre 2024 une recherche intitulée « Attitudes machistes chez les jeunes et les adolescents d’Euskadi ». L'étude a pour but de permettre une meilleure compréhension du phénomène des attitudes machistes chez les filles et garçons jeunes et adolescents et d'extraire une série de conclusions, afin de les utiliser comme base de recommandations pour soutenir les autorités publiques et améliorer les politiques publiques en matière d'égalité entre les hommes et les femmes.

35th Anniversary Reception of the Office of The Ombudsman celebrates commitment to promoting administrative justice and fairness
The inaugural International Ombudsman Summit 2024, hosted by the Office of The Ombudsman, Hong Kong, was held on 3 December. The Summit coincided with the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the Office. To celebrate this important milestone, the 35th Anniversary Reception was also held in the evening.

On 31 October 2024, the Ombudsman published the findings of the second ‘own initiative’ investigation, which focuses on the administration of carers’ needs assessments by 4 Local Authorities in Wales – Caerphilly County Borough Council, Ceredigion County Council, Flintshire County Council and Neath Port Talbot Council.
