The Control Yuan has issued a report calling for the New Taipei City Government, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Health and Welfare to review the handling of the case last year of an illegal sheet-metal dwelling resided in by 18 wheelchair-bound individuals, and issuing advice on making improvements in related policy.

2026-04-29High-level panel on the importance of Ombudsman institutions’ compliance with the Venice Principles
On 18 May 2026 from 3pm to 6pm local time, the President of the UN General Assembly will convene a high-level panel at the UN Headquarters in New York on “The importance of complying with the Venice Principles for Ombudsman institutions to strengthen the institutions’ independence and autonomy and create an enabling environment to perform their mandate nationally and internationally” in accordance with General Assembly resolution 79/177. The event will be live streamed in all 6 official UN languages on the UN Web TV Website and a recorded video will be available in English and original language after the event. The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman has launched its new five-year strategy, marking a renewed commitment to delivering fair and impartial justice for individuals and a greater focus on its role in improving public services. The new strategy, running from April 2026 to March 2031, sets out a vision to become a more established and influential voice in public service improvement, raising standards and driving system-level change across the NHS, government departments and other public bodies.

2017-10-31Ontario Ombudsman and International Ombudsman Institute co-host training session in Ontario
From Oct. 23 – Oct. 25, 2017, the Ontario Ombudsman’s Office presented three one-day workshops on managing unreasonable complainant conduct for its staff and participants from other North American oversight offices. Presented by Donald Sword of the New South Wales Ombudsman, the sessions focused on techniques and strategies for mitigating challenging complainant behaviour and mediating issues arising from that behaviour.

2026-04-10Citizens need an accessible government specifically tailored to them: Record number of second line complaints at the Flemish Ombudsman Service
In 2025, the Flemish Ombudsman Service received 10,158 questions and complaints, with a remarkable increase in the number of second‑line complaints. A growing cohort of citizens ends up at the Flemish Ombuds Service when procedures are too complex, when they struggle with digital public service desks, or when communication from governmental actors is unclear. According to Flemish Ombudsman, Myriam Parys, these signals show that there is still room for improvement for the Flemish Government when it comes to becoming more accessible, transparent, and responsive. That is why she is advocating more than ever for a government that is tailored to the needs of the people.
