AORC | Webinar on strengthening the mandate of the Ombudsman – video link now available

On 21 September 2021, the African Ombudsman Research Centre (AORC) – the scientific branch of the African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA) – hosted a webinar on the topic of “Effective tools to strengthen the mandate of the Ombudsman”. Speakers at this facilitated discussion included Ms Grace Tikambenji Malera, Ombudsman of Malawi, Ms Caroline Sokoni, Public Protector of Zambia, Mr John Walters, Ombudsman of Namibia, and Mr Werner Amon, Austrian Ombudsman and Secretary General of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI).

This facilitated discussion put a special focus on practical and effective ways to strengthen the mandate of the Ombudsman and the discussion explored the following questions:

  • Why is there a need to strengthen the mandate of the Ombudsman?
  • What are the most practical and effective tools to empower the Ombudsman to execute their mandate?
  • How can the Venice Principles and the UN Resolution as international standards inform strong, independent offices?
