Making Disability Rights Real in New Zealand

Wednesday, 21 October 2020

3.00 – 4.00 pm NZST

The New Zealand Office of the Ombudsman warmly invites you to attend an international Zoom webinar “Making Disability Rights Real in New Zealand” presented by Olivia Soesbergen and Simon Latimer Senior Advisors Disability Rights at the Office of the Ombudsman of New Zealand.

The Office is part of New Zealand’s Independent Monitoring Mechanism (IMM) under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (the Disability Convention).  The IMM’s role is to provide independent evaluation of the extent to which disabled New Zealanders are enjoying their universal human rights set out in the Disability Convention. The purpose of the Disability Convention is to promote, protect, and ensure universal human rights and fundamental freedoms for disabled people, and promote respect for their dignity.

Simon and Olivia will discuss the background, role and function of New Zealand’s IMM and how the Chief Ombudsman practically undertakes his work to protect and monitor the rights of disabled New Zealanders. They will discuss the latest report by the New Zealand IMM “Making Disability Rights Real” and other recent projects.

The Webinar will provide an opportunity for international colleagues to learn about the application of the Disability Convention in New Zealand.  It will discuss challenges, tensions and opportunities at the interface between the disability sector and independent ombudsman institutions.

Participants are encouraged to ask questions in advance (by emailing international@ombudsman.parliament.nz) or at the end of the Webinar via the Zoom Q&A function.

This Webinar is for international colleagues who are interested in understanding how the Disability Convention can work in practice, and particularly those who already have or may in the future have a monitoring function under the Disability Convention.
