South African Military Ombud Virtual Conference

in collaboration with the University of Kwazulu-Natal (UKZN) and the African Ombudsman Research Centre (AORC)

The South African Military Ombud (SAMO) and African Ombudsman and Mediators Association (AOMA) cordially invites you to the Annual (Virtual) Military Ombud Symposium under the theme: The Role of Ombud Institutions in Enhancing Democratic Oversight in the Civil-Military Relations: Its Use, Challenges and Implications. With the changing social dynamics globally, exacerbated by COVID-19 pandemic, more and more military personnel are deployed in civilian communities.

These deployments also turn out to be the new normal and impact on both the role of the militaries and the civilian outlook. In light of this, how are the fundamental rights of the two groups ensured in order to harmonise civil-military relations.

Therefore, this year’s symposium aims to explore and unpack challenges and opportunities on how to enhance the capacity of Ombudsman Institutions through the sharing of best practices on oversight of the civil-military relations.

Prof V. Ayeni (Director GMSI UK), Dr M. Khanyile (Director: CEMIS), Prof L. Heinecken (Stellenbosch University), Mr P. Dubé (Ontario Ombudsman), Hon F. Kajuju (Kenya Ombudsman) and Lt Gen L.S. Sangweni (Chief Joint Operations: SANDF).
