ALBANIA | People's Advocate sheltered eight Roma families

59 members of eight Roma families – among them 30 children aged seven or younger were sheltered at the ambiences of the People’s Advocate Institution due to their critical living conditions.

On the occasion of a visit paid by the Albanian People’s Advocate, Igli Totozani, to the Roma community in Tufina Mr. Totozani learned about the lack of water and electricity. Due to unusually low temperatures and the absence of heating many of the children were suffering from the season virus. Considering the critical situation the People’s Advocate offered his institution’s ambiences to the families.

On 1 February 2012, the families put up their tents at the People’s Advocate Institution ground space. Women and children got sheltered at the ambiences inside the institution. Medical assistance was provided to the sick children.

Mr. Totozani, stated that the tents would remain there until the eight families - citizens of Tirana - are being provided with a final solution.

After twelve days the families moved to a new shelter made available by the association “Romani Baxt Albania”. The community is supposed to stay there until the construction of a permanent housing offered by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs is completed.
