Azerbaijan | Ombudsman took part in the 11th International Conference of the Ombudsman for the Armed Forces

The representatives of the Azerbaijani Ombudsman participated at the 11th International Conference of the Ombudsman Institutions on Armed Forces held on 28-29 October 2019 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Building strong and sustainable Ombudsman Institutions, the cooperation with armed forces and transferring the information about the activities of the Ombudsmen in this field to the public were discussed in the framework of the conference.    

The representative of the Azerbaijan Ombudsman informed the participants of the event about the activities of the Ombudsman in protection of the personnel of the armed forces. He noted that the Ombudsman established a unit specialized in the protection of the rights of military servicemen and their family members in the Institution. The Ombudsman and her specialized advisors on military issues conduct visits to military units, educational and medical establishments, hold legal awareness raising events for the personnel on the basis of action plans agreed among the Ombudsman Office, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Ministry of Emergency Situations. These activities are disseminated via mass media and included to annual reports together with the relevant proposals and sited in the official website of the Ombudsman in Azerbaijani and English language.

By the initiative of the Ombudsman, the Handbook on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Armed Forces Personnel published by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights in 2008 was translated into Azerbaijani language and edited by the OSCE Baku Office.
