PAKISTAN | Ombudsman Punjab Delivers Rs 216 million in Relief to 269 Citizens in Three Months

The Office of the Ombudsman Punjab has secured the payment of outstanding dues amounting to Rs 216.10 million to 269 citizens across the province within just three months, demonstrating the impact of effective ombudsman intervention in resolving public grievances and ensuring accountability in public administration.

The relief was secured following the intervention of Honourable Ombudsman Punjab Ms. Ayesha Hamid, after citizens approached the institution seeking redress over delays in the payment of dues by government departments. Acting on the complaints, the Ombudsman Punjab issued directives to the departments concerned, resulting in the disbursement of outstanding payments and the resolution of long-pending financial claims.

The payments covered a broad range of entitlements, including financial relief, contractual dues, pensions, family pensions, employment-related benefits, and other outstanding payments. These interventions helped citizens obtain the funds to which they were entitled, underscoring the Ombudsman's role as an accessible mechanism for addressing maladministration and improving public service delivery.

The disbursements comprised Rs 89.46 million in financial relief for 80 citizens; Rs 26.73 million in contractual dues for 30 citizens; Rs 37 million in pension payments for 16 citizens; and Rs 2.915 million in family pensions for eight citizens.

A further Rs 10.95 million was paid to 40 citizens as marriage grants, while 10 citizens received Rs 5.798 million in death grants. Payments also included Rs 5.219 million in General Provident Fund (GP Fund) dues for 23 citizens and Rs 36.758 million in salary arrears for 55 citizens.

In addition, three citizens received Rs 239,000 in property tax-related payments, two received Rs 113,400 in farewell grants, one received Rs 923,000 in group insurance benefits, and another received Rs 750,000 in gratuity.

The beneficiaries expressed their appreciation to the Office of the Ombudsman Punjab for the timely resolution of their complaints and the release of their outstanding dues.

The results highlight the practical contribution of the Ombudsman Punjab in addressing citizens’ grievances, facilitating access to administrative justice and ensuring that government departments fulfil their obligations. By securing tangible outcomes for complainants, the institution continues to demonstrate the importance of independent and effective grievance-redress mechanisms in promoting responsive governance, administrative accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights.
