BAHRAIN | Ombudsman presents Annual Report 2020-2021

The Ombudsman for the Ministry of Interior of the Kingdom of Bahrain published the English version of its Annual Report 2020-2021.

The Office received more than 7,000 complaints over the eight years since its establishment in 2013. In the year under review (i.e. the period from 1 May 2020 to 30 April 2021), the office received a total of 900 complaints, which is a slight increase in comparison to the last year. 209 were complaints (this equals 23%), while the number of assistance requests reached 691 (this is approx. 77%). In relation to the sources of these complaints, it is remarkable to note that the Ombudsman initiated investigations into 10 grievances on its own initiative.

COVID-19 and facing operational challenges

Last March the Ombudsman activated virtual communication services with inmates in coordination with the General Directorate of Reform and Rehabilitation to communicate with inmates, who wish to file a complaint or a request for assistance. These precautionary measures became necessary to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus while also ensuring the Ombudsman’s services.
