BAHRAIN | Ombudsman presents Annual Report 2018-2019

The Ombudsman for the Ministry of Interior of Bahrain has recently published its sixth Annual Report covering the period 1 May 2018 to 30 April 2019.

In this period the Ombudsman has received 1067 complaints and assistance requests. Ombudsman Nawaf Mohamed Al Moawdah declares that this number reflects the users´ confidence in the impartiality, professionalism and commitment to justice of the Bahrain Ombudsman for the Ministry of Interior.

Ombudsman Al Moawdah explains that assistance requests refer to the many cases where inmates or their families have questions or are experiencing difficulties. This might, for example, be a request to continue academic education, take school examinations, requests related to medical issues, have exceptional family contact, or access special services related to disability or facilities. These requests are classified as ‘assistance requests’ because the respective complainants do not allege misconduct or criminal behaviour by Ministry of Interior personnel.

The Annual Report also covers the investigation of eight cases of deaths in detention and hopes to ensure that important lessons can be learned in order to prevent future avoidable deaths.

According to Ombudsman Al Moawdah the institution´s effectiveness is underpinned by three important elements:

  • Sound procedures supported by an excellent manual
  • A commitment to the proper induction of new staff
  • An ongoing commitment to training and development
