BackA new research report by the NSW Child Death Review Team (CDRT) has been tabled in the Parliament of NSW on 14 September 2026.
This report brings together findings from the CDRT’s case series study of LGBTQA+ suicide deaths in NSW alongside its commissioned independent literature and desktop reviews from ARTD Consultants, titled LGBTIQA+ youth suicide in NSW − literature and desktop review.
Key highlights:
- The CDRT’s research report highlights the increased risks of suicide-related deaths among sexually diverse, gender diverse and/or intersex children and young people in NSW.
- The report found that supportive environments, including positive parental and family relationships and inclusive schools, are vitally important protective factors against suicide deaths of LGBTIQA+ children and young people.
- The report also identified gaps and barriers to accessing suicide prevention services and opportunities for existing services to better support LGBTIQA+ young people.
Recommendations:
The CDRT has made 7 recommendations aimed at reducing the prevalence of suicide among LGBTIQA+ young people, including strengthening support, prevention and access to services, and creating more inclusive and affirming environments.
The CDRT will monitor and publicly report on the acceptance and implementation of these recommendations in its annual reports and via the CDRT website.
