KOREA/THAILAND | MOU signed between the ACRC of Korea and the Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Thailand

On 18 December 2014, the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC) of the Republic of Korea (Chairman Lee Sungbo) and the Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Thailand extended the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Bangkok to keep promoting cooperative activities.

The ACRC and the Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Thailand have maintained active cooperation to address complaints and grievances of their nationals in the other country since they signed the MOU in December 2011. For example, they opened “windows for complaints” exclusively for their nationals residing in the other country so that the nationals in each other's country can file complaints in their mother tongues. In addition, they held a joint meeting to listen to the difficulties and inconveniences encountered by their nationals in the other country.

Based on the above-mentioned achievements, the ACRC and the Ombudsman of the Kingdom of Thailand agreed to extend the bilateral MOU for three years and to improve cooperation in order to safeguard the public interests of Korean and Thai citizens living in each other’s country. For instance, they agreed to strengthen active roles of ombudsman in both countries in order to resolve complaints of nationals living in the other country, to regularly exchange information on the status of handling complaints and grievances of citizens of each other’s country, and to improve unreasonable laws and regulations that cause difficulties and problems for nationals of the other country.

The ACRC's Standing Commissioner Choi Hakkyun who participated in the MOU extension signing ceremony said, “I wish that the extension of the bilateral MOU not only strengthens the public interests of Korean and Thai citizens residing in each other’s country but also will be recognized as a global good practice of ombudsman’s role of addressing complaints and grievances of nationals residing in other countries in the modern era where people-to-people exchanges are on the rise along with the globalization.”
