PORTUGAL | Human Rights and Environmental Assessment: the FIO experience

The Ombudsman, within the framework of its international cooperation with the FIO - Iberoamerican Federation of Ombudsmen, participated in the collective work "Recommendations for the incorporation of a human rights approach in environmental impact assessment".

The work includes a set of recommendations to strengthen the environmental impact assessment procedure, improve the decisions of the Public Administration, anticipate future impacts and promote proper accountability. It also aims to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, defined by the UN as goals to be reached by 2030.

In Portugal, we await the approval of additional legislation on mineral deposits, in the expectation that it will promote access to information on exploration projects, allowing the effective participation of stakeholders and access to justice.
