IOI | Annual Report 2018/2019 now available

The IOI General Secretaria presents the annual report on the IOI’s work and services, as well as the most important developments and achievements in 2018/2019.

We were able to continue some of the IOI’s already well-established services to members. Training was offered on a wide range of topics such as torture prevention, mediation or advanced Ombudsman impact. The regional subsidies programme continued to fund interesting projects on Ombudsman-related topics in all six IOI regions and the exchange of knowledge and information among members was facilitated and fostered through seminars and conferences, many of which took place to celebrate anniversaries of long-standing and respected institutions around the globe.

Unfortunately, the number of colleagues who work under difficult circumstance, who fight adverse changes to their legal basis, who face reprisals or obvious threats also kept rising in 2018/2019. This shows the high need for international standards to promote and protect the institution of the Ombudsman and we are very pleased to report that a first step in this direction was made by the Council of Europe’s Venice Commission, which adopted a set of principles on the protection and promotion of the Ombudsman institution in March 2019. The IOI was actively involved in the consultation and developing phase of these principles and we will continue to work in this direction with a view to raise awareness about the Ombudsman concept and to make Ombudsman institutions and the important work we do more visible.

The IOI Annual Report 2018/2019 is now available on this website in all three languages of the IOI.
