APOR | 4th Issue of the Waka Tangata APOR E-news now available

The 4th issue of the Waka Tangata reports about the importance of internal and external relations with Ombudsman in the Asia-Pacific region. Developing integrity institutions capabilities has been a keen focus of Australian and New Zealand Ombudsmen lately. Mutual visits and exchange offer a learning experience for both parties. Another focus is put on successful local outreach work in various jurisdictions of the past years. For example, it was interesting to see the Queensland Ombudsman reporting delivering 247 training sessions, of which 96 were delivered regionally, and participating in 54 community engagement activities.

Furthermore, the 4th issue of the Waka Tangata informs about the New Zealand Office’s Official Information Practice Investigations. They currently focus on local government agencies’ official information practices and procedures. The New Zealand Office travelled literally the length of the country to look at different models of operating. These reports also provide insights that may be useful for international colleagues despite the systems not being identical.

This issue of the Waka Tangata also informs about Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass’ investigation on how children and young people in Victorian prisons and youth justice systems are being damaged rather than rehabilitated through excessive use of isolation and separation.

The Waka Tangat moreover lists upcoming events in the region, such as the 12th IOI World Conference, which will be held in Dublin (Ireland) from 17-22 May 2019 and training courses.
