A delegation of the Board of Directors of the European Region of the
International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) is embarking on a two-day visit to
Hungary, from the 16th to the 18th of March, responding to the invitation of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights of Hungary, Akos Kozma.

In his current newsletter editions, the Hungarian Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, Dr. Ákos Kozma, focuses on the war in Ukraine and he calls for solidarity and the protection of human rights.

Among the people’s written complaints received by the Control Yuan (CY), cases regarding judicial and prison administration accounted for the largest number, as high as 39.1%. In order to get better understanding of the Citizen Judges Act, which will take effect in 2023, the CY invited the Judicial Yuan Criminal Department to come to the Control Yuan and to deliver a speech on the new citizen judges trial system.

During the 2021 financial year, the Ombudsman received a total of 4,866 complaints. After fact-finding, decisions and recommendations to relevant government agencies were issued on 2,675 of these complaints. The remaining 2,191 complaints are still under investigation.

On March 17, 2022, the National Assembly of Québec appointed Mr. Marc-André Dowd the Québec Ombudsman. His term of office will begin on March 27, 2022. His career and his indepth knowledge of the Québec Ombudsman institution are a natural fit with his new role.

The African Ombudsman Research Centre (AORC) invites you to attend a webinar on “Seeking higher ground – values and ethics of the Ombudsman” to be held on 30 March 2022. This facilitated discussion will discuss whether there is a need for a general code of ethics for Ombudsman and promoting ethics and accountability in government and Ombudsman institutions.
