Ombudsman of Hong Kong presented 2018-19 Annual Report to the public
The Hong Kong Ombudsman, Ms Winnie Chiu, presented to the public today (25 July) the 2018-19 Annual Report of the Office of The Ombudsman. The Office of The Ombudsman (the Office) received 4,991 complaints in 2018-19, slightly higher than the previous year’s figure. Among the complaints received, 205 were concluded by way of full investigation, of which 58 (28.3%) were substantiated or partially substantiated, similar to previous year’s figure of 26.2%.

Commencement of the Ombudsman Act 2017
The new Ombudsman Act 2017 commenced on 31 January 2018. The coming into effect of this new Act means that any person who is unhappy about how any government office deals with them, can complain to the Ombudsman. Furthermore, the Ombudsman is empowered by this new Act to not only investigate appropriate complaints that it received but can also initiate investigations on its own from information received from any other source including the media.

We are pleased to share with you the OECD Report “The Role of Ombudsman Institutions in Open Government”. The report is the first of its kind as it documents the central that Ombudsman institutions play in the global open government agenda. It is based on the data from 94 Ombudsman institutions in a total of 65 countries worldwide. It was prepared by the OECD, with the assistance of the European Ombudsman and several Ombudsman Networks, among them the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI).

Office of the Ombudsman and Anti-Corruption Commission sign memorandum of understanding
The Ombudsman of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Leon Jenkins-Johnston Esq. and the Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission Francis Ben-Kaifala Esq. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on behalf of the two institutions. Visit of the Sopronkőhida Prison
On 28 September 2017, Commissioner for Fundamental Rights Dr. László Székely and experts from our Office (OPCAT experts Head of Department Dr. Gergely Fliegauf and Deputy Head of Department Dr. Katalin Haraszti) paid a visit to the Sopronkőhida Prison together with three experts from the Austrian Ombudsman Board, in order to exchange their experience focusing on the OPCAT NPM.

Meeting of the Slovenian and Hungarian National Preventive Mechanisms
