English overview of the Chancellor of Justice activities in 2018/2019 now available
The Chancellor of Justice, Estonia, has just released its Annual Report 2018/2019. The report covers the period from 1 September 2018 to 31 August 2019. It gives an overview of the activities of the Chancellor of Justice in the areas such as the rule of law, the rights of the child, the rights of persons with disabilities, prevention of ill-treatment, protection and promotion of human rights, protection of privacy, and many others.

The fifth annual report of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe on the state of democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Europe is now available. As with previous reports, the five chapters look at the key building blocks of democratic security: efficient, impartial and independent judiciaries; freedom of expression; freedom of assembly and freedom of association; democratic institutions; and inclusive societies.

How Tusla and the HSE provided and coordinated supports for a child with a disability in the care of the State
In a recently published report, the Ombudsman for Children presents the case of Molly (Names have been changed to protect anonymity), who was born with Down Syndrome and severe autism and has grown up with her foster family after being placed there when she was a baby. Molly’s foster carer made a complaint to the Ombudsman about the level of supports and services being provided and the Ombudsman’s investigation found that there was a lack of co-ordination between the two agencies which meant that services and supports provided by both organisations were insufficient.

Establishment of the Office of the Ombudsman in Tonga
The initial name of Commissioner for Public Relations has been changed to Ombudsman. This is to put Tonga in line with other countries in calling the head of the Office "Ombudsman". The Office no longer holds the name "Office of the Commissioner for Public Relations" but is known now as "the Office of the Ombudsman."
