2024-10-24Appointment of Acting Ombudsman and Ombudsman
The Chief Ombudsman announces that the Ombudsman Appointments Committee (OAC) had, in accordance with the requirements under Section 217(1) and (2) of the Constitution and Sections 4(3) and 11(a) of the Organic Law on the Ombudsman Commission, appointed Tabitha Suwae as an Ombudsman and Kevin Kepore as Acting Ombudsman. Mr. Kepore’s term as Accounting Ombudsman expired on 9 October 2024. The position of Ombudsman Accounting will be advertised publicly as is the current practice to give an opportunity for potential candidates to apply, including the Ombudsman.

La Defensoría del Pueblo de Panamá presenta ante la Comisión de Gobierno de la Asamblea Nacional un anteproyecto de ley para modificar Ley No. 7 de 5 de febrero de 1997, que crea la Denfensoría con la finalidad de fortalecer su marco jurídico conforme a los estándares internacionales de derechos humanos, las recomendaciones de los órganos de tratados de los cuales Panamá es signataria, y los Principios de París adoptados por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas.

Malera made the call in a presentation she made during a webinar organized by the University of Malawi (Unima).

Ombudsman announces investigation results on enforcement against unauthorised land developments
The Ombudsman, Mr Jack Chan, on 24 October announced the completion of a direct investigation operation regarding the enforcement by the Planning Department (“PlanD”) and the Lands Department (“LandsD”) against unauthorised land developments, and made 16 major recommendations for improvement to the two departments.

European Ombudsman criticises Commission failure to inform public how it assessed human rights risks in EU-Tunisia agreement
The European Ombudsman has criticised the Commission for not being transparent about the human rights information it relied on before signing an agreement with Tunisia that includes EU funds for border management. She also called on the Commission to set out explicit criteria for suspending EU funding.

Urgent need for review of special needs youth placement in adult facilities per CRC
Based on Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) data, the number of children with developmental, physical, or mental disabilities placed outside their families rose to 1,243 in 2023. Of these, 176 cases (15%) were housed in adult care facilities, which have been unable to meet the children's social adaptation and peer interaction needs, thus failing to adhere to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

Ombudsman reaches seven ADCs with Mobile Accountability Clinics
The Office of the Ombudsman has in the past week been to eight Area Development Committees (ADCs) in Nkhata Bay district with Mobile Accountability Clinics. The Office has been conducting meetings with about 40 members of each ADC and later held public rallies, raising awareness about the functions of the office and how local communities can utilize its services.

La Defensoría del Pueblo de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires elaboró un trabajo llamado "Adolescentes y apuesta online. Diagnóstico sobre un fenómeno que trasciende el entorno digital", un informe sobre las apuestas en línea que se elaboró, entre julio y septiembre de 2024, tras recopilar el testimonio de 2.765 estudiantes de entre 12 y 19 años que estudian en el territorio porteño.
