New Ombudsman of the City of Cape Town took office
On 1 June 2020 Mr Vusumzi Magwebu took office as the new Ombudsman of the City of Cape Town. He has vast experience in investigations from both private and public sectors. He is a former prosecutor and was also a senior investigator with the office of the Public Protector, South Africa.

Respect older people’s rights when exiting the COVID-19 pandemic
Many older people in care homes fell victim to COVID-19. Many also faced months of isolation and restrictions often harsher than those enforced for other parts of the population. The EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) looks at how the pandemic affected the rights of older people. It highlights the need for a rights-based approach as governments shape their exit strategies.

Now is the time for solidarity on human rights
The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has put states across the world to a test like none before, and not least in Europe. As the outbreak rapidly develops, governments have taken broad and strict measures to reduce the virus’ spread, prevent a breakdown of healthcare systems and save lives. In these responses, all human rights must be kept at the heart, as they can help us in overcoming this public health challenge while protecting our dignity and democratic freedoms.

Hanne Harlem, the first female Norwegian Parliamentary Ombudsman
Hanne Harlem began her first term as Norwegian Parliamentary Ombudsman on February 1st. She was appointed as Parliamentary Ombudsman by the Norwegian Parliament, the Storting, in October 2019.

Ombudsman for Children’s investigation into the living conditions of children living on a local authority halting site
On Monday, May 24, the Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO), published No End in Site; An investigation into the living conditions of children living on a local authority site. The OCO met with families and visited the site on three occasions, observing the very basic conditions, which have been in place since the site was established in 1989.
