    South Australian Ombudsman's 2023-24 Annual Report tabled in parliament

    The South Australian Ombudsman’s 2023-24 Annual Report was tabled in parliament on Tuesday 15 October 2024. The Ombudsman, Ms Emily Strickland, reported a five per cent increase in the number of complaints received – rising to just over 4600. More than 180 complaints were resolved by agreement including through the use of statutory conciliation powers.

    Mediation Case: Lands Department attentive to public concern with prompt actions to address risk of tree collapse

    A village resident was concerned about the condition of the trees on the government land nearby, particularly a large tree adjacent to his house, which had grown taller and taller with its trunk leaning more significantly. The Ombudsman’s Office sympathised with his long-standing concern, given that tree collapse had caused casualties time and time again in the past.

    Taxpayers' Ombudsperson releases 2023–2024 Annual Report

    Canada’s Taxpayers’ Ombudsperson, Mr. François Boileau, released his annual report, Fair Access to Service, which was tabled on 8 October 2024 in the House of Commons by Ms. Iqra Khalid, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue. The report provides an overview of the activities of the Office of the Taxpayers’ Ombudsperson between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024.

    On 20-24 November 2023, Seimas Ombudsperson Erika Leonaitė and the advisors of the Human Rights Division of the Office visited Copenhagen. The study visit was organised by the Danish Parliamentary Ombudsman's Office, which not only deals with complaints, like most Ombudsman institutions, but also carries out national torture prevention functions in accordance with the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

    Case study: claims of unfair promotion practices in the armed forces of Malta

    A Major in the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) lodged a complaint after he was not promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel despite meeting the eligibility criteria. He claimed the selection process for the promotion was flawed and that he suffered an injustice as a result. The investigation by the Parliamentary Ombudsman of Malta examined the selection process used for promotions from Major to Lieutenant Colonel within the AFM.

    Annual Report on the activities of the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture in 2022

    On 18 December 2022, 20 years had passed since the adoption, by the UN General Assembly, of the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Thanks to the implementation of the OPCAT into the Polish legal system, the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture has been operating in Poland for nearly 15 years already as part of the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights.

    Ombudsman to investigate child welfare practice of placing children and youth in hotels, motels, offices and trailers

    On September 5, 2024, Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé announced an investigation into the practice of child welfare agencies placing young children and teens in hotels, motels, offices and trailers. The Ombudsman launched the investigation on his own initiative in light of several reports about children being inappropriately housed in these settings. Ombudsman staff have already visited some of these children and youth to see their living conditions and hear their concerns directly.
