2018-02-23Commencement of the Ombudsman Act 2017
The new Ombudsman Act 2017 commenced on 31 January 2018. The coming into effect of this new Act means that any person who is unhappy about how any government office deals with them, can complain to the Ombudsman. Furthermore, the Ombudsman is empowered by this new Act to not only investigate appropriate complaints that it received but can also initiate investigations on its own from information received from any other source including the media.

2018-02-20Ombudsman rules complaint of marketplace vendors against removal of kiosks founded
The Ombudsman considered a complaint filed by a group of thirty Marketplace Vendors founded and ruled that the standards of Reason, Active and adequate information provision, and Reasonableness and proportionality have been violated. The vendors had informed the Ombudsman that they were negatively affected by the decision of the Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Traffic and Telecommunication (Minister TEATT) to breakdown and remove all Kiosks in Philipsburg.

2018-02-13New Control Yuan members welcomed at pre-inauguration meeting
Control Yuan President Chang Po-ya welcomed all 11 new CY members at a pre-inauguration meeting held January 18, 2018, two days after the nominees were approved by the Legislative Yuan. In a speech at the gathering, she expressed the expectation that all members will work together in exercising their constitutionally-granted independent ombudsman powers in order to ensure good governance.

Ombudsman Toronto released a report on an Investigation into Toronto Community Housing Corporation’s Medical and Safety Risk priority transfer process for tenants. Ombudsman Susan Opler made 21 recommendations to improve fairness and to serve tenants with the most serious health and safety concerns related to their units.

According to the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, this practice is in violation of the right to equal dignity and the country’s international human rights commitments.

2018-02-05NIPSO investigates complaint against Department for Infrastructure
The Public Services Ombudsman investigated a complaint by Belfast City Airport Watch Limited (BCAWL) regarding the actions of the Department of Environment in relation to George Best Belfast City Airport in failing to enforce the 2008 Planning Agreement between it and the Airport as well as concerning the handling of BCAWL’s complaint by the Department. The Ombudsman identified five instances of maladministration by the Department and made recommendations on the matter.

2018-01-30Record number of complaints received by the Finnish Parliamentary Ombudsman in 2017
In 2017, the Parliamentary Ombudsman received a record number of 6,192 complaints, which is an increase of almost 1,300 complaints from 2016 (4,922 complaints). Complaints against the Social Insurance Institution (Kela) totalled 1,169, and 814 of them concerned social assistance, therefore increasing by about 700 compared to 2016. The criminal sanctions field, social insurance and labour and unemployment security were other administrative branches that saw a clear increase in the number of complaints.

2018-01-30New Commissioner of Official Languages takes office
Raymond Théberge took office as Commissioner of Official Languages on January 29, 2018. He has a PhD in linguistics from McGill University, a master’s degree in applied linguistics from the University of Ottawa and a bachelor’s degree in history from the Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface. He held a number of leadership positions before coming to the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages, and he has significant experience with official language minority communities. He also has extensive experience in academia and has worked across Canada.
