2024-07-18En el caso de la muerte de una cocinera de un centro penitenciario, la síndica alerta de una actitud laxa por parte del Departamento de Justicia
El pasado mes de marzo un interno del Centro Penitenciario Mas d'Enric, que realizaba funciones de auxiliar de cocina, mató con un cuchillo a Núria, una cocinera del centro, y a continuación se suicidó. En señal de protesta e indignación, numerosos trabajadores penitenciarios protagonizaron bloqueos en los accesos a los centros penitenciarios de Cataluña que provocaron afectaciones al funcionamiento habitual de los centros. Ante estos hechos, organizaciones sociales de protección de derechos humanos, abogados y familiares de personas privadas de libertad se dirigieron a la institución del Síndic de Greuges para denunciar las afectaciones que sufrían los internos como consecuencia de este bloqueo.

2024-07-18Parliamentary Ombudsman submitted Annual Report 2023 to Speaker of Parliament
On 25 June 2024, Parliamentary Ombudsman Petri Jääskeläinen submitted his Annual Report 2023 to Speaker of Parliament Jussi Halla-aho. In 2023, there were a total of 7,124 complaints (6,613 in 2022). This is just over 500 (7.7%) more than the previous year. The largest number of complaints concerned social welfare 1,136 (997), the police 855 (821), healthcare 803 (751) and criminal sanctions 591 (672). In the reporting year, 6,876 complaints were resolved. The corresponding figure in 2022 was 6,857.

The Office of the Ombudsman has released the 2023 Annual Report which presents the activities that the Office carried out in the year. Pursuant to the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi and the Ombudsman Act, the Ombudsman has submitted the report to the National Assembly through the Office of the speaker.

On Monday, 8 July 2024, the Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon, expressed his despair at the last volume of case reports published by the Child Law Project. He has also expressed serious concern about the fact that the Child Law Project has not been re-commissioned, and fears that this indicates the shutting down of open communication between the courts and the public in relation to children in care.
