    In July 2013 St Maarten Ombudsman Nilda Arduin brought her first-ever case before the Constitutional Court of Sint Maarten, requesting the Court to review the new Criminal Code of St Maarten as to its compliance with the Constitution of Sint Maarten. On Friday, 8 November 2013, the Constitutional Court delivered its judgment.

    Ombudsman issues reprimands to doctors for operating on patient against her will

    Parliamentary Ombudsman Petri Jääskeläinen has issued reprimands to two doctors at a central hospital as well as to a hospital district for an unlawful action. In addition, he has recommended that the hospital district make recompense to the patient for the violations of her fundamental and human rights to which she was subjected.

    Open meetings notice time disputed

    The question of what constitutes a 24-hour notice to the public under Iowa’s open-meetings law became an issue of contention a few days ago. Ombudsman Ruth Cooperrider warned that the Iowa Public Information Board’s ruling opens the door for Iowa governments to elude the requirements of the law, whose intention it is that the information must be easily accessible to the public for at least 24 hours before meetings are held.

    The Catalan Ombudsman recommends institutions to actively combat energy poverty

    Rafael Ribó proposes a "winter truce" for people at risk of exclusion to stop cuts of light, gas and water for non-payment. He also proposes to set up a social price for butane and to bank on progressive pricing of water supply. Some other proposals for possible immediate application are a Working Group, to disseminate information about grants and allowances, to involve the network of houses of social inclusion and promoting educational actions for energy saving.

    Public awareness on land rights

    Between 28 September and 20 October 2013, the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance of Tanzania (CHRAGG) conducted a public awareness campaign on land rights in 22 districts out of 169 districts of the 14 regions of Tanzania. The targeted groups were citizens and local government officials at the ward and village levels.

    Commissioner on social care workers’ wage system

    In the recent months the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights has received several complaints concerning the wage system of social care workers. The complaints referred to the fact that, as far as remuneration is concerned, social care workers are not treated in the same way as those working in the healthcare system and licenced by the Office of Health Authorisation and Administrative Procedures.
