    I.O.I. elects new Executive Committee

    The I.O.I. Board elected a new Executive Committee in October 2010: New Zealand Chief Ombudsman Beverley WAKEM was elected President. Northern Ireland Ombudsman Tom FRAWLEY will serve as Vice-President and Hong Kong Ombudsman Alan LAI was elected I.O.I. Treasurer.

    New admissions to the I.O.I.

    At its 2011 meeting in Zambia, the Board of Directors unanimously approved the applications for institutional membership from a total of six ombudsman institutions from the Asian, the Caribbean & Latin American and the European Region.

    Arne Fliflet new on the European Board

    The Norwegian Ombudsman Arne Fliflet recently became member of the European Board by a vote in the General Assembly of the European region of the I.O.I. Arne Fliflet replaces the Greek Ombudsman Yorgos Kaminis in this function. Fliflet was elected Norwegian Ombudsman for the first time in 1990. He has subsequently been re-elected five times, the last appointment being in 2009.

    New People´s Advocate appointed

    The I.O.I. congratulates the new incumbent of its Romanian member institution. On 27 September 2011, Prof. Gheorghe Iancu was appointed as the People´s Advocate of Romania for a five year term by the Romanian Parliament.

    The first stage of an EU Twinning project regarding the protection of family, woman and child rights has been launched by the State Committee on Family, Women and Child Issues and the European Union. France is the cooperation partner.

    Alberta Ombudsman begins duties as Public Interest Commissioner

    Mr. Peter Hourihan, Ombudsman for the Canadian province of Alberta, was recently appointed the province’s first Public Interest Commissioner. The office was formally launched 1 June, 2013 after new legislation, the Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower) Act, came into force.

    First "Sharpening Your Teeth"-Training in the I.O.I. General Secretariat

    A first round of training for staff members of ombudsman institutions has started today at the I.O.I. General Secretariat in Vienna. The educational program is based on the format “Sharpening Your Teeth” that was successfully invented by the Ontario Ombudsman André Marin in 2005. The specific I.O.I. edition is held in English and offers a three-day training on systemic investigations. It brings together administrative watchdogs from 18 different countries from all over the world.

    SYT II Training in Vienna in June 2011 - now open for registration

    Following the successful first I.O.I. edition of the “Sharpening Your Teeth”-Training that was attended by 38 participants from 17 different states, the I.O.I. is organising a second SYT training which will be held from 5 to 8 June 2011 at the I.O.I. General Secretariat in Vienna, Austria. This three-day training on systemic investigations for staff members of Ombudsman institutions is based on the format “Sharpening Your Teeth” that was successfully invented by the Ontario Ombudsman.

    The Estonian Chancellor of Justice has, as of 1 January 2011, formed a new division in his office dealing only with children's rights. This is done in the framework of preparatory activities for becoming Children's Ombudsman.
