On Monday, 8 July 2024, the Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon, expressed his despair at the last volume of case reports published by the Child Law Project. He has also expressed serious concern about the fact that the Child Law Project has not been re-commissioned, and fears that this indicates the shutting down of open communication between the courts and the public in relation to children in care.

2024-07-10European Regional President Reinier van Zutphen discusses migration and asylum issues in Warsaw
The National Ombudsman of the Netherlands and European Regional President, Reinier van Zutphen, visited Warsaw last week. The aim of the visit was to talk to Frontex. Over the past years there have been many disturbing signals about pushbacks of migrants at the EU borders which sometimes resulted in people dying. Several National Ombudsman have addressed this in their own countries.

En France, plus de 10 millions de personnes vivent en dessous du seuil de pauvreté, dont trois millions d’enfants. La crise sanitaire et les confinements successifs ont amplifié les phénomènes de précarisation, provoquant une aggravation des conditions de vie déjà dégradées pour les familles les plus pauvres et exposant de nouveaux publics à la pauvreté. Ainsi, en 2020, huit millions de personnes ont eu recours aux distributions alimentaires, le nombre de bénéficiaires du revenu de solidarité active (RSA) a augmenté de 7,5%, et des milliers d’étudiants connaissent la précarité et décrochent de leurs études.

The last week of June marks World Whistleblower Day and Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier says he is very heartened to know that people seem to feel more comfortable about reporting issues. In 2022/2023 the Chief Ombudsman received 128 protected disclosures and enquiries, which was an 80% increase from the previous year (with 71 received in 2021/22).

An NHRIs symposium held on the side-lines of COP26 from 3 - 5 November 2021 aims at providing a greater understanding of the climate regime to facilitate NHRI work to promote and support human rights within climate policy and climate accountability. The event will also be an occasion for NHRIs to discuss and consult on the monitoring and reporting tool on climate change and human rights, which is currently developed by GANHRI.

In a public report delivered under the Public Interest Disclosure Act, BC’s whistleblowing legislation, Chalke said his office’s investigation showed this practice had a variety of negative effects.

Speaking today [30 September 2021] at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Petitions, the Ombudsman said that the legislation, which dates back to 1980, should be replaced with a more modern, fit for purpose alternative, in line with the United Nations endorsed Venice Principles - the global standard for public service Ombudsman institutions.
