2024-12-13Ombudsman recommends solutions to Office of Children’s Services
Alaska State Ombudsman Kate Burkhart made seven recommendations to the Alaska Department of Family and Community Services, Office of Children’s Services (OCS), after an ombudsman investigation. The investigation was prompted by a complaint from a foster parent, who alleged OCS conducted an unfair investigation into a Protective Services Report, failed to seek timely mental health services or placement for a child, and made an inappropriate placement decision. The investigation revealed that OCS struggled to find effective solutions for a youth with complex needs and challenging behaviors.

2024-12-13Ombudsperson investigating province’s distribution of assistance cheques to most vulnerable British Columbians during Canada Post strike
The BC Ombudsperson is investigating the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction’s distribution of cheques intended for income and disability assistance clients during the current Canada Post strike. The Ombudsperson’s investigation was commenced after being advised by the ministry that as of the beginning of December 2024, thousands of November social assistance cheques were not yet delivered.

La institución considera que ninguno de los argumentos ofrecidos por los ayuntamientos consultados justifica el retraso en el establecimiento de estas zonas cuyo fin es la lucha contra el cambio climático y la mejora de la calidad del aire de las ciudades, y recuerda que algunos de ellos han recibido ayudas económicas para su implementación. Insta a que los municipios que ya hayan establecido una Zona de Baja Emisión en su territorio se abstengan de adoptar cualquier medida que suponga una regresión.

2024-12-13Sesenta municipios catalanes no disponen de plan de emergencias por inundación, a pesar del riesgo existente
La síndica de Greuges de Cataluña, preocupada por las afectaciones que puede tener el cambio climático en Cataluña, especialmente en las zonas inundables, en 2023 abrió una actuación de oficio. Se hizo un seguimiento del grado de cumplimiento de la obligación y recomendación de tener estos planes de emergencia municipales y, finalmente, se emitió una resolución para difundir sus resultados. De los 521 municipios que deberían tener obligatoriamente plan de emergencias por inundación, solo lo tienen 206 (el 39 %).

The report provides a snapshot of voluntary public interest disclosures made between 1 October 2023, when the Public Interest Disclosures Act 2022 (PID Act) commenced, and 30 June 2024.

National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) from 46 countries contributed to the development of a global report on women in prison, launched on 12 December 2024 by the Geneva-based Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT). The report highlights significant challenges and systemic discrimination faced by women in prisons around the globe, calling for urgent reforms and greater use of alternatives to detention.

2024-12-06DPU Advocates for Women Victims of Domestic Violence Accused of International Child Abduction
On Wednesday, 13 November, at the National Congress, the Federal Public Defenders’ Office (DPU) called for greater recognition of the plight of women who, as victims of domestic violence, are accused of international child abduction. Federal Public Defender Daniela Brauner participated in two public hearings held at the Federal Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, addressing the application of the Hague Convention in cases where Brazilian mothers return to Brazil with their children after fleeing domestic violence.
