    June information bulletin of the Public Defender

    The Public Defender has presented June information bulletin about the efforts of the Public Defender's Office. The key topic in the information bulletin is the visit and important meetings of the Public Defender and his delegation to Brussels.     Children’s Ombudsman highlights gaps in the oversight of children’s residential centres

    An investigation by the Ombudsman for Children found significant gaps in the approach to registering, inspecting and monitoring of children’s residential centres which are run by private and voluntary agencies. He has recommended that the inspection of these centres should transfer to HIQA without delay.

    Agriculture Government of Sindh pays cost differential to complainant

    The complainant approached Provincial Ombudsman Sindh Mr. Asad Ashraf Malik with the issue that Agriculture Department awarded contract to his firm for construction of road for improvement of Cane Yard. The construction work was carried out as per Public Works Department rules with clear provision that in case of cost escalation the differential would be borne the department but the Agriculture Department refused.

    MDAC research on access to justice for children with mental disabilities

    The Mental Disability Advocacy Center (MDAC), an international human rights organisation based in Budapest, recently completed a 2-year European multi-country research project on access to justice for children with mental disabilities. The project was designed to strengthen access to justice and legal remedies for children with intellectual or psycho-disabilities who have been victims of human rights violations.     Mrs Sheila Brathwaite is the newly appointed Complaints Commissioner of the Virgin Islands. Mrs. Brathwaite replaces the Territory's first Complaints Commissioner, former Deputy Governor Mr. Elton Georges, who served for some six years.

    Ombudsman Punjab constitutes Jails Inspection Committees

    Ombudsman Punjab Javed Mahmood, in the light of the orders of Supreme Court of Pakistan, has constituted Ombudsman Jail Inspection Committees for all districts and tehsils of the province. Ombudsman Jail Inspection Committees at district and tehsil level have made first inspection visit of district/tehsil sub-jails and started preparing report on the state of affairs of the jails for onward submission to Supreme Court.

    Teacher's freedom of speech was violated by the municipality

    A reprimand for the violation of a teacher's freedom of speech was issued to the headmaster of an upper comprehensive school by Parliamentary Ombudsman Petri Jääskeläinen. He requests the municipality to consider how this violation of freedom of speech could be redressed and how the teacher could be compensated.

    Recommendations for improving the situation of Spanish nationals detained in prisons overseas

    The Ombudsman, Soledad Becerril, has presented a study on the situation of Spanish prisoners abroad which analyses 224 complaints dealt with by the Institution in the last two years, and makes recommendations for improving the situation that the prisoners find themselves in.
