Japanese Earthquake
The I.O.I. has been shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck parts of Japan. All members of the International Ombudsman Institute would like to offer sincere condolences to those who are suffering in the wake of this catastrophe and particularly those who have lost loved ones.

Alberta Ombudsman Gord Button resigned from his position as a Director representing the North American Region on the Board of Directors of the I.O.I. In the previous membership year Gord Button acted as Treasurer of the I.O.I. and significantly contributed to the success of the Institute.

Stronger protection of the rights of customers of credit institutions
The Ombudsman observed problems and has made recommendations to the Minister for Finance and the Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank. According to the Ombudsman, the rights of the citizens as consumers are often violated by credit institutions.

The EU ombudsman recently expressed his intention to draft a statement of ethical principles for EU civil servants. In order to take full account of best practice in the Member States, he sent out a questionnaire to the national Ombudsman institutions in Europe the results of which can now be found online.
