In a meaningful outreach initiative, the Ombudsperson Punjab, Ms. Nabila Hakim Ali Khan, visited the Women University of Multan to promote awareness about critical legal protections for women. During a seminar held on campus, Ms. Khan discussed two essential legal frameworks designed to protect women's rights: the Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2010 and the Punjab Enforcement of Women Property Rights Act 2021. Her aim was to emphasise the importance of understanding and utilizing these laws to safeguard women’s rights.

In this fascinating paper, Nick Bennett, the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales and IOI Board member describes the work he did to ultimately achieve new legislation which strengthened his Office. It’s particularly interesting because in recognition of the independence of his Office, the legislation was developed by the Welsh Parliament (the National Assembly for Wales), and not the Government.

After a visit to Kybartai Foreigners’ Registration Center, the Head of the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office, Erika Leonaitė, published an NPM report. The Seimas Ombudsperson concludes that all the conditions applicable to foreigners in Kybartai FRC are equivalent to inhuman or degrading treatment prohibited under the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

The IOI follows recent developments, which could pose a threat on the independence of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights with great concern and underlined its full support for the office in a letter to the Speaker of Parliament, which was signed by IOI President Chris Field, IOI Secretary General Werner Amon, and the Regional President of IOI Europe Andreas Pottakis.

Awarding temporary public service jobs to 64 ineligible people over a 10-year period represents systemic mismanagement and wrongdoing by BC’s Public Service Agency, Ombudsperson Jay Chalke said on 24 June 2024. In a public report delivered under the Public Interest Disclosure Act, BC’s whistleblowing legislation, Chalke said his office’s investigation showed this practice had a variety of negative effects.
