    The Ombudsman Sindh Mr. Asad Ashraf Malik organized a seminar on “Challenges of Health Care System in Sindh – Role of Provincial Ombudsman Sindh” which focused on the existing health facilities, identifying gaps and devising innovative strategies for improved service delivery, effective polio immunization campaign in Sindh Province.

    Ombudsman working to improve services for asylum seekers

    Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has published a commentary on his Office’s experience of dealing with complaints from refugees and asylum seekers living in direct provision centres.  In ‘The Ombudsman & Direct Provision – The story so far’, the Ombudsman says that sometimes residents are reluctant to complain and some complaints arise as a result of cultural differences.  As a result the Ombudsman’s office has worked with the Reception and Integration Agency, and residents and managers in 35 centres around the country to seek to improve services.

    Ombudsman investigation recommends improvements in HSE’s Treatment Abroad Scheme

    Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has today published a report following his investigation into the HSE’s administration of the Treatment Abroad Scheme. The investigation followed complaints to the Ombudsman about the scheme including suggestions that it was overly complex, that there were delays in approving applications and that some applicants were being given incorrect information.

    How Tusla and the HSE provided and coordinated supports for a child with a disability in the care of the State

    In a recently published report, the Ombudsman for Children presents the case of Molly (Names have been changed to protect anonymity), who was born with Down Syndrome and severe autism and has grown up with her foster family after being placed there when she was a baby. Molly’s foster carer made a complaint to the Ombudsman about the level of supports and services being provided and the Ombudsman’s investigation found that there was a lack of co-ordination between the two agencies which meant that services and supports provided by both organisations were insufficient.

    European Region elects new Director

    The term of Ms Lucia Franchini as Ombudsman of Tuscany (Italy) ended and as a result, the position of one European Director on the IOI Board of Directors became vacant. According to the European regional by-laws one of the Directors at the European regional Board, Ms Ülle Madise, Chancellor of Justice of Estonia, took over the vacant seat at the IOI Board and elections were held to fill the vacant position on the European regional Board.

    Human rights have no expiration date - better protection needed in elderly homes

    Lack of staff in homes for older persons in long-term care as well as their lack of knowledge on human rights are the main causes of violation of rights in these institutions. The beneficiaries are satisfied with accommodation quality and they consider the staff to be the strongest link in the institutional chain, emphasised Ombudswoman Lora Vidović at the opening of the conference „Human rights have no expiration date – living in homes for older and handicapped“ organised on 8 December at the Elderly home Centar in Zagreb.
