    Serious deficiencies in accessibility - polling stations were not accessible for wheelchairs

    At the request of Parliamentary Ombudsman of Finland, Petri Jääskeläinen, two officials from the Office of the Ombudsman of Finland performed unannounced inspections at the polling stations of eight municipalities in the region of Southern Finland during the European election day on 26 May. The purpose of the inspections was to determine the accessibility of polling stations, the possibilities for inclusion of persons with disabilities, and the realisation of the secrecy of the polls. One of the official conducting the inspection used a wheelchair.

    A new report about National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) and their work on migrants’ human rights has been produced by the German Institute for Human Rights on behalf of GANHRI, the Global Alliance of NHRIs. The report highlights examples of NHRIs’ work to promote and protect migrants’ rights, including several practices from Europe.

    Discrimination in job advertisements

    The Public Defender of Rights (Ombudsman), as the Czech equality body, responses for researching in the area of discrimination and his first research was focused on employment (job offering). Ombudsman analyzed about 12,000 job advertising released on one of the portals in April and found out that every 6th advertisement was discriminatory.

    Nova Scotia Appeal Court upholds power of ombudsman's office

    Nova Scotia's highest court has reaffirmed the power of the provincial ombudsman's office to investigate allegations against government departments and agencies. In a decision, the Appeal Court ruled the Ombudsman's office has the authority to receive unredacted records from the Department of Health and Wellness, after the province had objected to releasing the documents in full.

    ACRC wins UN award for innovative communication with citizens

    The Korean I.O.I. member ACRC recently received an UN award for "Advancing Knowledge Management in Government" for its "e-People" tool. This integrated online portal deals with civil complaints and proposals regarding central and local governments and public organizations. The average number of daily visitors is about 100,000.

    Government prepares decision for joining Optional Protocol to the Convention of the Rights of the Child on a Communications Procedure

    Currently, Hungary is not yet party to the Optional Protocol to the 30-year-old Convention on the Rights of the Child on a Communications Procedure. It is thus a significant development that upon Commissioner for Fundamental Rights László Székely’s appeal, the Minister of State for Family and Youth Affairs at the Ministry of Human Capacities has indicated: they have begun to prepare the decision necessary for Hungary’s joining the optional protocol.

    Regional subventions are a huge success

    At the Bermuda Board Meeting in October 2011 the I.O.I. Board decided that the I.O.I. would provide funds up to a maximum of EUR 50,000 for regional projects. Member institutions were invited to submit project proposals with a focus on training activities. Six applicants from five of the six I.O.I. World Regions were successful in the selection process conducted by the I.O.I. Executive Committee in spring 2011.

    The Ombudsmen and staff of the New Zealand Office of the Ombudsmen look forward to welcoming the ombudsman community to New Zealand in November 2012 to the I.O.I. world conference. Formal invitations and information about registration will be sent out in a few months and the conference website has recently gone "live".

    Franc succès des subventions régionales de l’I.I.O.

    Lors de sa réunion aux Bermudes en octobre 2010, le Conseil d’administration de l’I.I.O. a décidé que l’I.I.O. financerait à concurrence de 50 000 euros des projets régionaux durant l’année d’adhésion 2010/2011. Pour ce faire, les institutions adhérentes ont été invitées à soumettre des propositions de projets mettant en particulier l’accent sur des activités de formation. Six candidats de cinq des six régions de l’I.I.O. ont été retenus au cours de la procédure de sélection menée par le Comité exécutif de l’I.I.O. au printemps 2011.

Les invitations officielles ainsi que les informations relatives à l’inscription seront envoyées d’ici quelques mois et le site Internet du congrès sera « en ligne » sous peu.
