Covid-19: states of emergency and democratic values - New contribution to the debate
On 26 May 2020 five members of the Council of Europe’s Venice Commission have published a new report on the respect for democracy, human rights and the rule of law during states of emergency. The Commission has previously produced general reports and country-specific opinions on both constitutional provisions and emergency legislation; a recent compilation of the Commission’s work in this area provided guidance into its specific findings.

Algorithmes discriminatoires : le Défenseur des droits et la CNIL réunissent les experts
Jeudi 28 et vendredi 29 mai, le Défenseur des droits, en partenariat avec la CNIL, organise un séminaire d’experts autour des algorithmes discriminatoires. L’occasion d’un premier dialogue entre chercheurs, sociologues, juristes et développeurs. A l’issue, les deux autorités proposeront plusieurs recommandations afin de garantir à chacun une égalité de traitement dans les nombreuses situations où une partie du choix est faite par une intelligence artificielle.

United Nations Human Rights Report 2019
Michelle Bachelet is pleased to present the first report covering an entire year of her term as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The year 2019 was marked by important developments supported by the OHCHR’s headquarters and 84 field presences across the world. Given the rapidly ageing population across Europe, National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in the region are increasingly working on the promotion and protection of the rights of older persons. In order to understand specific human rights challenges in old age, it is crucial for NHRIs to directly engage with older persons including through their representative organisations and bring real lived experiences into their work.

Independent oversight to ensure the rights of disabled people are upheld during the COVID-19 pandemic
The Independent Monitoring Mechanism (IMM) is made up of the Disabled People’s Organisations’ Coalition, the Human Rights Commission and the Ombudsman. We are designated to monitor the actions of government under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (Disability Convention) to make sure it is meeting its obligations to disabled New Zealanders.

El pasado día 26 de marzo, el Ararteko cumplió con la obligación legal de entregar su informe anual de actividad al Parlamento Vasco. No obstante, y dada la situación de emergencia de salud pública derivada de la pandemia de coronavirus COVID-19, no ha sido posible su entrega protocolaria a la presidenta de la Cámara ni su presentación ante los medios de comunicación.

Overcrowded reception centres with no possibility to practice physical distancing or follow hygienic measures are some of the main concerns the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) identifies in its latest migration quarterly bulletin. At the same time, closed borders make it difficult for refugees to reach safety in the EU and leave some people stranded at sea. Suspended asylum procedures leave many in limbo.
