Slovenian Human Rights Ombudsman Peter Svetina attended a two-day conference of the European Network of Ombudsmen (ENO) in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. Hosted by the offices of the European and French human rights ombudsman's offices, representatives of European national and regional ombudsman institutions and other participants active in this field discussed the role of ombudsmen in times of crises.

2022-04-13Secretary General meets Under-Secretary-General for Policy in the Office of the United Nations Secretary-General
On 12 April 2022, IOI Secretary General Werner Amon met H.E. Volker Türk, Under-Secretary-General for Policy in the Office of the United Nations Secretary General at the UN Headquarters in New York. Mr. Amon and Mr. Türk discussed the UN Secretary-General’s “Common Agenda” and perspectives for the IOI to contribute to an inclusive and networked multilateralism for sustainable development, as the only global network representing Ombudsman offices in all world regions.

La Defensoría del Pueblo reafirmó su compromiso con la protección de los derechos fundamentales de las personas migrantes, asegurando el acceso de este sector de la población a atención médica gratuita a través del Seguro Integral de Salud. Ello fue posible luego de dos casos ocurridos en Ica y Tarapoto, en los que el punto en común fue que las personas requerían atención médica especializada y no contaban con los recursos ni la documentación necesaria para acceder a estos servicios.

2024-10-17Ombudsman institution critical about the process of solving long-lasting problems in the field of environment also at the President’s Forum
On 30 September 2024, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar, at Brdo pri Kranju hosted the fourth President’s Forum, in the forefront of which was the right to healthy a living environment. During the debate, Deputy Ombudsman, Dr Dijana Možina Zupanc, emphasised that violations of human rights in this field are ongoing, since every year the institution receives almost 200 complaints, of which approximately one fifth is valid.

2024-10-17Ombudsman celebrates 50 years with conference on the role of the Ombudsman in the defence of democracy and fundamental rights
On September 27, the Palácio de Vilalva in Lisbon hosted the conference “Five Decades of Freedom and Justice: Celebrating 50 Years of the Ombudsman and April 25”. The event, organized by the Ombudsman’s Office, marked the fiftieth anniversary of the creation of this institution in Portugal.

In October 2022, the Ombudsman Commission received a complaint in relation to continuous waters disruptions from a long-time resident in one of the suburbs in the National Capital District (city). The resident raised concern that her neighbourhood had been experiencing continuous water disruption for almost twenty years.

Every year, around 1,600 students from the Caribbean part of the Kingdom embark optimistically on a study programme in the Netherlands, but many fail to make it to the end. The National Ombudsman drew attention to this issue. He investigated the challenges faced by Caribbean students and made recommendations for government and other organisations.
