According to the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, this practice is in violation of the right to equal dignity and the country’s international human rights commitments.

The Office of the Ombudsman (Malawi) is hosting the African regional training on "The role of Ombudsman Institutions in promoting and enforcing accountability ethics" as well as the 14th AOMA Executive Committee meeting from 5 - 9 February 2018 . The training will be held in the framework of the IOI's annual regional subsidy program and attended by IOI President Peter Tyndall.

An investigation carried out by Ombudsman Peter Tyndall in 2017 found that some women who worked in the Magdalen laundries in Ireland were wrongly refused access to the Magdalen Restorative Justice scheme. On Wednesday 31 January 2018 Ombudsman Peter Tyndall appeared before the Justice and Equality Committee of the Irish Parliament to discuss the findings of his report.

2018-01-30Ombudsman working to improve services for asylum seekers
Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has published a commentary on his Office’s experience of dealing with complaints from refugees and asylum seekers living in direct provision centres. In ‘The Ombudsman & Direct Provision – The story so far’, the Ombudsman says that sometimes residents are reluctant to complain and some complaints arise as a result of cultural differences. As a result the Ombudsman’s office has worked with the Reception and Integration Agency, and residents and managers in 35 centres around the country to seek to improve services.

2018-01-11Law amendments to establish Seimas Ombudsmen as NHRI have come into force
On 1 January 2018, amendments to the Law on the Seimas Ombudsmen came into force, providing new functions for the Seimas Ombudsmen, among which are the dissemination and monitoring of human rights in the country. The new functions include presenting the assessment of the human rights situation to international organisations and providing them with information regarding the obligations established in the international treaties of Lithuania.
